Read Art @ Greenwood is a performative exhibition that embeds artists books in the stacks of Greenwood Books, a beloved independently owned and operated used bookstore adjacent to Rochester Contemporary Arts Center. Artists books from independent publishers and presses, art collectives and artists who make books are displayed by category, deemphasizing their reception as an art object and reinforcing their function as purveyors of information. Their juxtaposition with trade books of similar subjects brings readers to them by chance, adding an element of surprise that happens when you don’t know what you’re looking for until you find it. This act of discovery is unique to physically browsing through the stacks of a bookstore or library, something that that is lost on the internet.
